Happy 20th Anniversary Roth Staffing. Join us as we celebrate the memories and milestones that have occurred over the course of the last two decades. This week’s memory is courtesy of Robert Hankin, Senior Vice President of MIS at Roth Staffing Companies, L.P.
In the summer of 2001, the MIS team and I thought of a wild idea to create a technology that would enable candidates to record video resumes. It may not seem like a big deal now, what with Skype, FaceTime, and Google Chat, but back then, no one had thought of doing anything similar to VideoSelect. Email was still a new way of communicating and there was no such thing as YouTube.
Although there were only a few of us in the department back in those days, we jumped in with both feet to plan out and design the ambitious project. We toiled for months. On Sunday, January 13, 2002, we demonstrated it was viable to stream video over the Internet, real-time, so that it could be recorded remotely. We presented the concept to Ben in January of 2002, and the rest is history!
Over the next year and a half we developed different versions of the technology, overcoming technical limitations and even operational and usage objections, until we created what is now called VideoSelect. We tried to figure out the best way to introduce the technology to the branches. Most people did not know what to think of the technology. “Wait, what, you want me to sit in front of a computer, and record a video, of me answering some questions and you are going to then send these videos to companies as a resume?” We heard every objection, listened to all the doubts and fears and decided the best way to prove what the technology could do was to install the VideoSelect computers at a handful of branches. We had some immediate success and some excellent feedback from the branches, Ambassadors and especially the customers.
VideoSelect was rolled-out across the company in April 2004. We held multiple webinars and trainings. People certainly had fears using and selling VideoSelect, which goes with the territory of being a creative industry leader. It wasn’t long before we started hearing success stories and in September 2004 we started celebrating those successes and sharing them with others. (see a few of the comments below)
VideoSelect has gone through a handful of upgrades and enhancements over the years. As we approach the tenth anniversary of VideoSelect this April 2014, (ten years since it became a mainstream sales tool for the company) it is very fitting to announce that the next version of VideoSelect is nearing completion. The new version brings HD quality video and the ability to playback on multiple devices including tablets and smartphones.
When we started this back in 2001, there was no such thing as a tablet or smartphone and only 30% of all households had high speed Internet connections. Today most smartphones have a faster Internet connection than what you could even get for your home. It is wonderful to see VideoSelect still being used as a differentiator and competitive sales tool for our company.
