“There are so many people who need and deserve help in the world." That's what coworker Barry Gray, Market Manager of Ultimate Staffing (a business line of Roth Staffing Companies) in Detroit, Michigan, says when asked about his years of active community service involvement with dozens of organizations.
Even before coming to Roth Staffing, where the company Purpose is "To make life better for the people we serve," Barry dedicated himself to making life better for others. While growing up under the care of a hardworking single mother, Barry cultivated a passion for helping those less fortunate—those who need a helping hand to get on the right track.
He became involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit, mentoring an 8–year–old boy named Greg*. A young child without a strong male role model, Greg had started getting into trouble at school and exhibiting behavioral issues. Barry became his mentor and father figure, helping with homework and demonstrating the importance of education, supporting Greg at Cub Scout events, taking him to the movies and fun Big Brothers Big Sisters events, and having him over to play football and jump on the trampoline with Barry's children.
He is merely one recipient of Barry's compassion and generosity. Barry has accrued a track record of volunteering with and donating to organizations like local food banks and shelters, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children, Handbags of Hope, Toys for Tots Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, various universities, and associations supporting muscular dystrophy and pediatric cancer research.
Perhaps the best thing about Barry's efforts is he doesn't go them alone; he rallies his coworkers, family members, and friends around these worthy causes as well! He led the charge for the Detroit team adopting a deserving family for the holidays, essentially providing a single mother and her two young children their first real Christmas. The coworkers brought the family into the branch office, showering them with gifts and funds to help them make it through. Barry's children are also following in his footsteps—a true sign of Barry's success as a role model and leading by example. Both of them choose to regularly donate any extra money to the homeless, and enjoy going with Barry to local shelters as well as Build-A-Bear events that benefit Children's Hospital of Michigan.
A friend and former coworker of Barry's sums it up best: "Barry is an amazing human being and a true inspiration to me and everyone around him. He inspired me to think outside of myself and take the time and effort to make a difference in the lives of others, especially those less fortunate. I can honestly say that he changed my life… and he continues to do that for others to this day!"
At Roth Staffing Companies, we couldn't say it better. Congratulations, Barry, you're our Roth Everyday Hero!
