Serious illnesses have a way of causing most people to focus on their personal wellbeing. It was just the opposite for Beverly Levy, a client of Ultimate Staffing's New Haven, CT branch office. When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, the first thing on Beverly's mind was helping others – even if she had to do it from her hospital bed!
She organized a community walkathon to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and fundraise for Discovery to Cure, an organization associated with the Yale School of Medicine that strives to improve the prospects for women with reproductive cancers and pioneer successful cancer treatments… and she organized the entire event while sitting in her chair receiving chemotherapy treatments!
Beverly brought her phone and laptop into her hospital room and made calls, sent emails, accumulated sponsors, and amassed walkers – never letting the treatments or their harsh side effects deter her. Outside of the hospital, she even removed her wig and went door-to-door collecting donations.
Beverly's efforts fundraised approximately $170,000 and gathered nearly 1,000 walkers to support the cause! The walkathon was such a success that several news channels swarmed on the event, further helping to spread awareness about ovarian cancer and the importance of preventative care.
Although Beverly just recently lost her battle with cancer this April 2014, her legacy lives on – the Discovery to Cure "Beverly Levy Walk" is now an annual event held at Yale every fall. Roth Staffing Companies is humbled to present Beverly's daughter with Beverly's Roth Hero award to honor her memory and the long-lasting impact she's had within her community, Connecticut, and nationwide!
