Our Roth Everyday Hero: The Gordon Family

Tiffany L. Johnson has been an outstanding Ultimate Ambassador on multiple assignments. But when she’s not working with us, Tiffany and her family are fighting for a very important cause, advocating for youth facing adversity.

Tiffany’s mother, Aquanetta Gordon, is no stranger to grief. Her son, Ben Underwood was diagnosed with cancer during early childhood, and at just three years of age lost both of his eyes to the disease.

Aquanetta, however, did not give up hope—and neither did Ben. He learned to better sense his environment through echolocation, a skill that few humans cultivate, but which allowed Ben to detect obstacles and move through crowds. He was able to run, play basketball, ride bikes, rollerblade, and skateboard. He traveled the world sharing his message, meeting Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres, and even hanging out with Stevie Wonder.

In 2009, Ben passed away at the age of sixteen. His memory and his spirit, however, live on through the Ben Underwood Foundation. Aquanetta, Tiffany, and their whole family all play an important role in running the foundation and spreading Ben’s story of hope.

In 2017, Aquanetta lost another of her five children. This time to gun violence. Aquanetta has spoken out about the incident, telling the media that while she wants her son’s killer to be caught, she gets no satisfaction from knowing that another mother will have a son in jail.

The Gordon family continues to represent the cause and bring hope into the world. Aquanetta has shared Ben’s story through Echoes of an Angel: The Miraculous True Story of a Boy Who Lost His Eyes but Could Still See.

Roth Staffing is proud to support Tiffany, Aquanetta, and the rest of the Gordon family with a Roth Heroes donation. Their cause and their resilience is an inspiration to us all.
