Adam Roth, President & COO of Roth Staffing Companies, Discusses Making Movements on VoiceAmerica Radio Program

Contrary to popular ideologies, making a movement relies mostly on attraction rather than promotion, claims Adam Roth, President & COO of Roth Staffing Companies.  On an episode of the VoiceAmerica Internet radio program “A Great Place to Work,” Roth said that investigating what attracts people to specific programs and products can enable positive change and make constructive coworker and client relationships possible.

Roth conversed about Making a Movement with co-hosts Curt Coffman, bestselling author of First, Break All the Rules, Follow This Path, and Culture Eats Strategy for Lunch, and Dr. Kathie Sorensen, a forerunner in studying Human Capacity and people management.  Roth stated that managers and leaders often focus on promoting the rational elements of new programs in order to convince hesitant employees to accept organizational changes, but this is the incorrect strategy to shape a movement.

“Most of the time, companies are so focused on building a project or product through a rational process that they forget what they believe in and how they are going to ignite that emotion or passion [in employees],” said Roth.  “I’m guilty of it sometimes!  It’s easy to get in ‘promotion mode’ and get too pulled down in the details rather than making sure to always talk about how a program aligns with the company and the things that coworkers are most passionate about.  It’s very difficult from a leadership perspective, but you have to realize that you’re never going to convince people to change.  There needs to be an emotional appeal.”

Roth shared a personal story with Coffman and Dr. Sorensen—a car buying experience where a businessman’s sales pitch about the car’s features stifled his initial excitement about the car’s appearance—in order to demonstrate that even clients respond stronger to attraction than promotion when considering a product.  “Companies may be promoting a feature or differentiator so they can get their foot in the door with a client, but that’s not why clients buy from them and work with them over time.  It comes down to that relationship and that connection they have with the company and coworkers,” explained Roth.

The topic jumped off from a previous episode of the show titled Accelerating Change, where the trio discussed pinpointing the people who will champion change within an organization.  In fact, Coffman and Dr. Sorensen regularly welcome Adam Roth to the show to discuss the importance of workplace culture and ways to “engage” employees.  This theme has become more and more important to the business world in recent years as Fortune 500 companies promote “A Great Place to Work” as an essential element of leadership development and employee training.
