Julia Olejar’s heart is special. It is big, and full of love. She keeps it healthy, dancing and playing softball. Julia’s heart beats strong, and it just so happens that Julia was born with it on the wrong side of her body. Julia is quick to correct, she does not have a heart defect … her heart is special. Julia, her parents, Kelly and Tim Olejar; and her brother and sister now dedicate their time to Children’s heart health. Tim, a Business Solutions Manager at Ledgent Staffing in Bloomington, MN, and his family are our newest Roth Heroes.
Julia was born with a condition known as dextrocardia. At 28 weeks gestation, Julia’s special heart was discovered. Doctors found that Julia’s heart was on the right side of her body as opposed to the left, and she only had one atrium. Julia was born without complications, and was able to go home with her parents after six days of monitoring. However, six weeks later, Julia returned to have open heart surgery to repair her single atrium, and at 9 weeks, Julia was given a pacemaker. While Julia’s pacemaker allows her to live a normal life, Julia endured a 110 day stay at Children’s Hospital Minneapolis due to complications and several other procedures.
Now Julia “runs circles around her friends” and is free to play and have fun like any other 8 year old girl.
While people with chronic heart conditions are never considered “fixed,” Julia is thriving. In honor of Julia and her special heart, Tim and Kelly, along with their friends and family, have participated in the Heart Beat 5000, an annual 5k that raises funds and awareness for children with heart health issues. Hosted by the Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota, Julia and her family have made quite an impression. In their first year, they raised $4500 and boasted a team of more than 90, and it continues to grow. Their team, known as “Julia’s Beat,” has raised more than $45,000 over the years for Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota.
In addition to the annual walk, Kelly also donates her time to Parents for Heart, a group that volunteers with the hospital to support families that have a child with a heart condition. Kelly connects with families in the cardiac unit during their difficult time. This ranges from something as simple as comforting conversation, to providing pizza parties. Kelly and her team also do their best to educate families through such a scary and uncertain time by arranging guest speakers and handing out brochures. For Kelly, it’s just another way to express her gratitude for Julia’s health.
For the Olejar family, a time of intense uncertainty has become an endless source of inspiration to better the lives of children with heart conditions.
Thanks to the support of thousands for heart health, and the medical advances that have been made, Julia’s story is a happy one. On behalf of the Olejar family, Roth Staffing will be making a donation to Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota.
