Winning streak: Company culture keeps staffing firm thriving, says CEO

Roth Staffing Companies continues to earn recognition locally and industry-wide as an employer and premier company in the staffing-services industry. The secret to its continued success? Company culture, according to CEO Adam Roth.

The firm has been named among the Orange County Register’s Top Workplaces for the last four years and ranked No. 3 on the list in 2015.

In March, Staffing Industry Analysts named Roth Staffing a 2016 Best Staffing Firm to Work For and a 2016 Best Staffing Firms to Temp For. This marked Roth’s sixth consecutive year as a Best Staffing Firms to Work For and third time as a Best Staffing Firm to Temp For. Roth Staffing is the only large office/admin firm to receive both accolades and one of only four staffing firms to receive the Best Staffing Firms To Temp For in North America.

Each of Roth Staffing’s specialized business lines has individually received Inavero’s Best of Staffing awards for Client Satisfaction and Talent Satisfaction for six years in a row. According to Inavero, less than 1 percent of staffing firms receive both of these honors.

Roth Staffing has also earned national recognition from Fortune magazine on three occasions in the past year: 50 Best Small/Medium Workplaces in the United States (ranked No. 25), 100 Best Workplaces for Women (ranked No. 35), and 50 Best Workplaces for Giving Back (ranked No. 6). ‘Culture-fit’

A shared commitment to company values unites all of Roth Staffing’s employees, or co-workers, according to CEO Adam Roth. (The company refers to employees as co-workers to reflect a relationship of equality rather than top-down management.)

“Our company’s culture is firmly rooted in a set of philosophies that each of our co-workers is passionate about, and it’s a culture that serves as the foundation of everything we do,” Roth said. “Most co-workers are excited about the culture they are introduced to during the interview process and often have the Values, Company Purpose and Promise committed to memory before Day One.”

Founder and Executive Chairman Ben Roth begins every companywide town-hall meeting by reminding everyone of the company’s overall purpose, while CEO Adam Roth introduces new initiatives with details about how they align with one of the company’s Guiding Principles or Values.

The organization takes a “culture-fit” approach to hiring decisions, to ensure that a given candidate will embrace the company’s values.

“The hiring philosophy at Roth Staffing Companies is that we can teach what we do, but we can’t teach how we do it – the behavior and personality required to do our work in a way that creates a remarkable experience for another human being,” Adam Roth said.

 

Creative rewards

With multiple business lines, each specializing in a specific staffing/recruiting expertise, and 120 offices throughout the United States, Roth Staffing has to take a creative approach to maintaining a positive company culture.

“In Orange County alone, there are nine branch offices and the corporate headquarters,” Adam Roth said. “Our company does not have the luxury of housing all its employees under one roof. We can’t create a Top Workplace by hosting a café, offering on-site babysitting, hosting events, playing video games … we have to find creative ways to involve all co-workers from coast-to-coast.”

Companywide initiatives include health challenges, volunteering opportunities, surprise gifts, celebrations, abundant recognition and plenty of opportunities for fun, all supporting Roth Staffing’s Company Purpose, “To make life better for the people we serve.”

Executive level leaders at Roth Staffing Companies have a reputation for being down-to-earth, fun, approachable, and compassionate, according to Vice President of Marketing Staci Johnson. For the last 17 years, Executive Vice President Pam Sexauer has handwritten birthday and company-anniversary cards to each of Roth Staffing’s nearly 600 co-workers nationwide and more than 100 in Orange County.

Adam Roth personally calls co-workers to congratulate them when their branch offices celebrate milestones or when they are recognized in his monthly CEO Contest. Ben Roth hosts “virtual coffees” where co-workers in any location can schedule to “meet” with him and share their ideas via video phone.

 

‘Promoting promoting’

Roth Staffing describes its approach to employee development as “promoting Promoting.” Its diligent efforts to fill open positions internally have yielded more than 80 internal promotions in the past year.

“We have a senior vice president who started as a branch manager more than 10 years ago, and a market manager who actually started as one of our temporary employees,” Johnson said. “We have a very structured system that allows coworkers to create various career paths for themselves in alignment with their own personal strengths. We have a manager’s learning path to develop future leaders and a robust mentorship program allowing co-workers to learn from peers and to provide a leadership opportunity for the selected mentors.”

 

Community support

Roth Staffing Companies’ internal charity program, “Purpose:full,” has focused on helping to fight childhood hunger in the United States for the past two years. In partnership with the No Kid Hungry campaign, it helped raise enough money in 2014 to fund 1 million meals. This year, the company partnered with the American Heart Association and is helping each of its 120 locations participate in their local Heart Walk with matching donations and swag. Already in 2016, the company has helped raise/donate more than $100,000 nationwide and the season has just begun.

In Orange County, $12,000 in donations to various non-profit organizations resulted from the Purpose:full initiative, including contributions to such organizations as Working Wardrobes, Boys and Girls Club, Toys for Tots, and Casa Youth Shelter.

Roth Staffing’s volunteer program encourages co-workers to use up to 4 hours of company time per quarter to support a charity or non-profit organization, and the company holds two Community Giving Days annually, on which an entire team volunteers to serve the community. Roth Staffing’s Orange County employees have performed more than 600 hours of volunteer work in the past year.

Additionally, Adam Roth is an executive board member of the American Heart Association Orange County Heart Walk and supports its fundraising efforts and mission.
