Spring Cleaning Tips for a Fresh Workspace

It’s the most organized time of the year – spring! As we kick into gear with a new season and plenty more daylight to enjoy our weeks, engaging in a little bit of spring cleaning might be the answer to boost productivity and fuel creativity – not to mention feel more organized at your workspace.

Whether you’re working from home or at an office, you can always do with some spring cleaning tips for a fresh workspace. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned.” Spending a little time revamping your workspace will go a long way in accessing documents quickly, feeling good about being in a cleaner space and save decluttering time before your next Zoom meeting. Let’s get you motivated to tidy up!

7 Tips to Spring Clean Your Workspace

Not sure where to start? Follow along for these helpful tips to spruce up your space. You’ll thank yourself later.

Tip #1: Start small

You don’t need to do everything at once! Schedule little breaks and start with a drawer at a time or a digital folder at a time. Make a note of the priorities and what needs to be organized first. The rest will all fall into place as you get into the zone.

Tip #2: Throw away “stuff”

It might be a good idea to pick up a trash bag and start throwing out all the junk you’ve collected. Empty candy wrappers in the drawer? We’ve all been guilty of that. Throw out unnecessary stuff including pens that are out of ink and anything else that doesn’t work. If there are supplies or items that work and you don’t use, start a bag for donations. There’s always somebody who could use extra supplies.

Tip #3: Clean

Bring that Clorox wipe and wipe down your desk and surrounding areas for a fresh space. Next, put everything that you have left all over your desk into pen holders or in file organizers for easy organization. Take your vacuum for a little swirl and clean the areas under your desk and around you to pick up any dust that might have collected over the months.

Tip #4: Get rid of paper

With everything being digital, why do you need to have so much paper around? Everything that can be saved on your computer should be digitalized. The rest should be shredded, but if you need to keep paper records, start an organized file to put away papers as you get them. Avoid getting into the habit of leaving paperwork all over your desk.

Tip #5: Organize your digital files

Since you’re in the zone to declutter, organize your folders and clean up your external hard drives. If there are emails and other documents you don’t need, delete them! Other documents should be filed away in folders that you will be able to access easily when needed. Clean up your desktop to avoid too many icons scattered across the screen. Trust us, this will be a game changer.

Tip #6: Add décor

While you want to keep this to a minimum, use this opportunity to invest in pen holders, colorful files and even calming posters to bring you joy as you walk into your workspace. Adding a small plant always does the trick.

Tip #7: Declutter regularly

Organizing your workspace doesn’t have to be an annual event. Mark your calendar every month to declutter and ensure all your files and documents are in order. This will make it so much easier for you to stay organized and avoid doing significant clean-ups once a year.

Focus on the Benefits of a Clean Space

If it’s been a while since you have organized or cleaned up your space, try not to get overwhelmed too quickly. Focus on the space and try to find ways to update and decorate your workspace in a way that brings you joy. After all, this is where you will spend a lot of your time!
