Navigating the Holiday Season as a Job Seeker: Dos and Don’ts

While you might think the end of the year is not the right time to search for a job, many companies are actively recruiting during the holiday season. Companies want to fill open roles before the end of the year and be prepared for the new year, so it’s the perfect time to take advantage of this and continue to apply to open roles!

Stay proactive and keep your resume sharp. You never know what job might pop up this festive season. However, some pointers may help you navigate the holiday season as a job seeker.

Do’s and Don’ts of Job Hunting During the Holidays

Here are some tips to remember before you hit the submit button.

Do: Continue your search and keep applying

Just because it’s December doesn’t mean it’s time to take a break because no one is hiring. In fact, this is a good time to stay competitive and persistent with your job search. Make sure to keep looking at job boards, social media and other websites to send in your applications. You may catch an employer’s eye with a coveted job because of your dedication.

Don’t: Assume no one is hiring

Many industries, including retail and customer service, will need seasonal roles to be filled. Additionally, corporate jobs including roles in finance, marketing and IT may need to be filled before the new year. By continuing your search, you might end up finding your perfect fit amidst the holidays!

Do: Attend networking events

With so many holiday events and parties happening in December, you can use this as a networking opportunity to discuss career goals and seek guidance. You should have your elevator pitch ready and use this time to build relationships – you never know where your connections can take you and what doors they could open.

Don’t: Forget to follow up

You want to keep the momentum going after events. Therefore, ensure you send a follow-up note to remind your connections about your conversation and leave a good impression. With so many events going on during the holidays, a simple follow-up could set you apart from the competition and help you stand out when you submit your application.

Do: Use social media

If you have time off around the holidays, use some of it to update your LinkedIn and other professional media websites. If you have won any awards, gained new certifications or completed big projects this year, add them! Show your network what you have accomplished and don’t be shy to share your reflections of the past year along with your goals for the new year. Actively engage with your network as you update your profile – you may catch the eye of a recruiter who has a job opening!

Don’t: Pass up seasonal roles

If you’re looking for new opportunities or want to gain new experience, seasonal roles may be the perfect fit for you at this time. While temporary, these roles could develop into full-time roles or open other doors as you strengthen your resume.

Do: Stay strategic

The end of the year is a good time for you to seriously evaluate your career, set your goals for next year, and determine what new skills you want to gain in the new year. Setting clear goals will help you stay focused next year and guide you during your job search. Map out the companies you want to apply to and continue to build your network. Have a plan in place so you can go into the new year ready for any challenges you may face.

Don’t: Give up!

It can be challenging to stay focused during the holiday season, but don’t get discouraged – your hard work will pay off! You don’t have anything to lose by putting yourself out there – especially at this time. As you are proactive in your job search, don’t neglect yourself. Focus on yourself and spend time with loved ones to make sure you have a balanced approach to your search.
